«Aber all deine Sachen sind rosa.»
«Rosa ist doof.»
«Komm schon, Liebling, lass mich deinen Rock hochziehen. So ein hübscher Rock.»
Sie schlägt nach mir. «Ich will kein Rosa. Ich hasse Rosa.»
«Nicht in diesem Ton, Emily Shattock. Ich dachte, du wirst an deinem nächsten Geburtstag sechs und nicht zwei.»
«Mummy, so was sagt man aber nicht.»
Was soll man mit einem Kind machen, das innerhalb von zwanzig Sekunden die Rolle von John McEnroe mit der von Dame Mary Warnock vertauscht? Auf dem Weg nach draußen rufe ich zu einem unsichtbaren Rich hoch, ob er nicht einen Mann bestellen kann, der sich die Geschirrspülmaschine mal ansieht. Ich drücke Paula einen Einkaufszettel plus mein gesamtes Bargeld in die Hand und achte darauf, viermal bitte zu sagen. Dann, gerade als ich bis zur Tür gekommen bin, löst sich Emily am Fuß der Treppe in Tränen auf. Von diesem Ende des Flurs her kommt sie mir nicht mehr so sehr wie eine geflügelte Furie vor, sondern eher wie ein sehr trauriges kleines Mädchen. Spüre, wie meine Wut sich zu Reue wandelt. Gehe zurück und nehme sie in den Arm, ziehe zuvor die Jacke aus, um Rotzspuren zu vermeiden.
«Mummy, warst du im Eiersteak Building?»
«Was?»
«Ich will mit dir aufs Eiersteak Building. Das ist bei Amerika.»
«Ach so, das Empire State Building. Ja, Schatz, eines Tages fahr ich mit dir hin, wenn du größer bist.»
«Wenn ich sieben bin?»
«Ja, wenn du sieben bist.» Und ihr Gesicht klart so schnell auf wie der Himmel nach einem Gewitter.
